The Italian Football Federation has elected a new president

At the assembly of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Giovanni Malago was elected as the new president with 68.58 percent of the votes compared to 29.17 percent of the votes for Giancarlo Abete, the representative of amateur football who presided over the FIGC between 2007 and 2014.

– I can’t do anything alone, but with you I can achieve everything – said Malago after the election. He replaced Gabriele Gravina as president, who resigned after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row.

Along with Gravina, coach Gennaro Gattuso and national team coordinator, former legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, also said goodbye. And their replacement will be one of Malaga’s most difficult tasks. The temporary national team is led by Silvio Baldini, who selected the team for the June friendly matches.

Former international player futsal, participated in the organization of several major sporting events in Italy, as well as in Rome’s bid, which was ultimately abandoned in 2016, to host the Summer Olympics in 2024. He led the Italian Olympic Committee from 2013 to 2025, notably handling a serious governance crisis in the FIGC in 2018 after the Nazionale failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. He also chaired the organizing committee of the last Winter Olympic Games in Cortina and Milan. Č is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The new president will have a lot of work: he will have to appoint a successor to Gennaro Gattuso as national team coach, a position that could be filled by Roberto Mancini, who previously held the position between 2018 and 2023. He will also have to tackle the reform of youth development, which is considered responsible for the repeated failures of the Azzurro, and candidacy for Euro 2032, is hosted together with Turkey, which is a thorny issue due to the outdated infrastructure of Italian stadiums.
