Special features of the Tour de France 2026

Queen stage of the Tour de France 2026

Die The crowning stage of the tour is on Saturday, July 25th. one day before arriving in Paris. Over around 171 kilometers, 5,450 meters of altitude await you, including the tour’s tower: the Col du Galibier with 2624 meters. Up to the highest point of the tour is 17.7 kilometers with an average gradient of 6.9 percent.

By the time they reach Galibier, the riders have already completed two difficult mountain classifications: the Col de la Croix de Fer (highest category) and Col du Télégraphe (first category). After the Galibier we go up the Col de Sarenne (highest category), and then the climb awaits us in the finale Alpe D’Huez.

Twice finish in Alpe D’Huez

The small mountain village will be the arrival point for the second time. While the participants in the 19th stage have to climb the legendary 21 bends after just 130 kilometers and a total of 3500 meters in altitude, the 20th stage takes them to the finish over the Col de Sarenne, a route that was only used as a descent in 2013. As a climb, this is an unknown route and takes riders through the Ecrins National Park.

Start in Barcelona with the local mountain Montjuic

For the first time since 1971, the first stage begins with a team time trial – and like 2024, not in France. In Barcelona, where the tour has already visited three times, the 23 teams have to ride 19 kilometers together. At the end they first have to conquer the local mountain Montjuic (100 meters high), and another ramp awaits them at the destination “Olympic Stadium”. Some favorites could already lose seconds there.

The riders usually only know Montjuic from the Tour of Catalonia, like here in 2023. This time there is a team time trial in Barcelona, right at the start of the Tour de France. Meurer/Beautiful Sports/Imago

Vosges stage on the German border

From a German perspective, things could be particularly loud for Florian Lipowitz on the track on Saturday, July 18th. In the 14th stage, the Tour Circus drives a mountainous Vosges stage with three mountain classifications in the first category (Grand Ballon, Ballon d’Alsace and Col du Haag) and a total of 3,800 meters in altitude. The start is in Mulhouse, around 20 kilometers from the German border. The destination after a 155 kilometer journey is Le Markstein Fellering.

Favorites of the Tour de France 2026

As in previous years, everything will be a duel between Jonas Vingegaard as a challenger and Tadej Pogacarwinner of 2025. The Dane Vingegaard (27) won twice himself (2022, 2023), but was four and six minutes behind Pogacar in the last two years. The Slovenian (27) is aiming for his fifth success. Both can look back on a successful season so far. Vingegaard won the Giro d’Italia and Paris-Nice. Pogacar three classics (Strade Bianche, Milan-Sanremo and Liège-Bastogne-Liège) as well as the two tours Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie.

More favorites

A big candidate for the podium is Paul Seixas. The 19-year-old is the great hope of the French. He won the Tour of the Basque Country and kept up with Pogacar in the classics Strade Bianche and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. However, he fell in mid-June. Also last year’s third place finisher Florian Lipowitz (25) belongs together with his co-captain from Red Bull – bora-hansgrohe, Remco Evenpoel (26), to the favorite circle. In addition, the Austrian Felix Gall (28) or Juan Ayuso (23), who is not driving in the same team as Pogacar for the first time, have smaller chances of reaching the podium.
