Contrary to previous rumors, the round of 16 of the World Cup between co-hosts Mexico and England is set to kick off as originally planned. British media reported in the evening that the kick-off time would remain at 6 p.m. on Sunday (2 a.m. CEST/Magenta TV) in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. There had previously been debate about bringing the game forward by up to six hours due to concerns about severe thunderstorms.
The world association FIFA had not confirmed these discussions. The media reports about a relocation caught the Mexican and English associations unprepared. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre spoke of a “punch in the stomach” because it had a significant influence on his planned processes. He was not asked, he told the Mexican station Radio Formula.
“Kick-off time unchanged after FIFA U-turn,” wrote the BBC. The broadcaster Sky News and the portal “The Athletic” sent breaking news about the development. If it stayed that way, there would have been a lot of fuss about nothing on Friday. An advance would also have had an impact on the game between record world champions Brazil and Norway, which is scheduled to kick off in New York at 10 p.m. German time.
Weather in Mexico has already caused delays
Due to a severe thunderstorm, the Mexicans’ round of 16 against Ecuador started an hour late for safety reasons. There were lightning strikes near the stadium. According to FIFA regulations, the governing body can cancel, postpone or relocate World Cup matches at its own discretion.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain repeatedly cause flooding on the streets in Mexico City during the summer months. In addition to the 80,824 spectators in the Aztec Stadium, the metropolis of the World Cup co-host is again expecting large gatherings at the fan festivals and on the streets of the city.
England professionals are unimpressed
“This has no influence on us. No matter what time we play, we will be ready,” emphasized England midfielder Morgan Rogers before leaving for Mexico City. His teammate Marcus Rashford was also unimpressed by the speculation. “No matter what comes our way, we will go out to win the game,” said Rashford.
