It started with the excitement of qualifying for the World Cup in November 2025: Marko Arnautovic called for a holiday in the mixed zone of the Happel Stadium. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen accepted the challenge – but under one condition: whoever brings the World Cup trophy to Vienna gets their holiday. Arnautovic was even invited to the Hofburg to “clarify the requirements”.
Now Austria has been eliminated in the round of 16 against Spain and the trophy will not go into red-white-red hands for the time being.
Van der Bellen reacted promptly: In an Instagram video, he added July 19, 2030, the day of the next World Cup final, as a new holiday in the calendar. “Gemma, boys!” he writes.
So the holiday has not been canceled, just postponed. And after all, four years is not an eternity.
