Alexia Putellas signs for London City Lionesses

The Spanish international Alexia Putellas will play starting next season for the English London City Lionesses, recently promoted to the Women’s Super League, after the London club announced this Wednesday the signing of the double Ballon d’Or winner, who thus heads to England after closing a historic 14-year period at FC Barcelona.

“London City is proud to announce the signing of the double Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas,” announced the English entity, which described the incorporation of the Catalan midfielder as “a historic moment” for the club.

The 32-year-old player thus begins a new stage after saying goodbye to the Blaugrana team, with which she has won 38 titles, including four Champions Leagues, ten F Leagues and ten Queen’s Cups, in addition to becoming the top scorer in the club’s history with 232 goals and the second player with the most games played, with 507.

“I am delighted to begin this new chapter with London City Lionesses. The club’s ambition and firm commitment to growing as an independent club dedicated exclusively to women’s football connects deeply with me,” said Putellas.

The world champion with the Spanish team assured that she faces the challenge with the objective of “having an impact on the field of play” while the team fights “for titles”, in addition to contributing to the growth of women’s soccer and the development of young soccer players.

For her part, the club’s owner, Michele Kang – also the owner of OL Lyonnes, whom Alexia defeated with Barça in the last Champions League final – highlighted that the arrival of the Spaniard represents “much more than a signing.” “It is a declaration of intentions about the future of this sport,” he said.

The London City Lionesses believe that the incorporation of Putellas will boost the growth of the club both at a sporting and commercial level and will reinforce the development of its youth team, in a project that aspires to consolidate itself among the elite of English women’s football.
