Sassuolo and Udinese in the Italian Cup round of 16, beating Frosinone and Venice

Sassuolo and Udinese qualify for the round of 16 of the Italian Cup where they will meet Juventus and Atalanta respectively.

Sassuolo beat Frosinone on penalties. After the 1-1 draw in the regular 90 minutes, it was Amey and Hasa’s errors from the spot that condemned the Ciociari, who with Terzic’s goal had responded to Dominguez’s initial lead. Lots of chances in the first half.

In the 15th minute Volpato leads a two-on-two and serves the former Bologna player who wastes one-on-one with Desplanches. In the 28th minute Cinquegrano also tries, breaking through on the right and getting a shot, but finding an excellent response from the Ciociaro goalkeeper. In the 36th minute the result was broken. Turati throws towards Dominguez who wins the physical duel with Akpoguma and this time does not tremble in front of the goalkeeper. However, the Neroverde advantage lasts very little. Frosinone’s equalizer materializes in added time with Terzic’s diagonal shot from outside the area which leaves Turati no chance.

Second half and the penalty lottery

At the beginning of the second half Aquilani changes the trident. Volpato and Dominguez out, Berardi and Laurienté in. However, FROSINONE has insights and ideas in the attacking phase. After a goal disallowed in Birligea for offside, Zerbin has the ball to make it 2-1: the former Napoli player, instead of shooting on goal, allows himself an excess of altruism by serving Bobcek, who however does not understand his intentions.

The Slovak tries again with a shot in the 72nd minute, but Turati blocks. In the 75th minute another goal canceled out for Frosinone, this time by Cichella, due to a previous foul by Fayed on Bowie detected at the VAR. Shortly afterwards the duel is repeated and Fayed himself is providential to take the ball away from Bowie for the Neroverde advantage after Cinquegrano’s usual progression on the wing. The score doesn’t change and it goes to penalties. Sassuolo is infallible with Berardi, Esposito, Thorstvedt and Bakola. Frosinone scores with Bobcek, Fayed and Zerbin, but pays for the errors of Amey (save by Turati) and Hasa (high).

Udinese-Venice: the Triveneto derby

Udinese, however, prevailed in the Triveneto derby in the round of 32 of the Italian Cup, but it was certainly no walk in the park for Runjaic’s men, especially in the first half.

Venezia started off much better and controlled the game from the very first minutes. Just 9 are enough to take the lead, with a maneuvered action: cross by Correia from the right, conclusion by Lauberbach, Mrozek arrives with his feet on the ball but on the rebound Sagrado is quick to anticipate everyone and score. The hosts seem absent, both in terms of maneuvering and opportunities in front of goal, with the lagoon players managing by consolidating the result by shooting several times with Lauberbach and Dagasso himself. Precision is lacking, as is Davis who has the merit of waking up his team by shooting from midfield just before the half hour mark, with Montipò watching the ball end up at the back. The goalkeeper is more of a protagonist shortly afterwards, with a double save on Miller and Unai Gomez. From the fourth home corner, after several minutes of pressure, the Friulian equalizes with Bayo who heads to make the most of Vojvoda’s cross from the left.

The Juventus comeback in the second half

Final half again with Montipò taking refuge in the corner on Kalstrom. At the beginning of the second half Runjaic replaced Bertola, in difficulty on the right, with Abankwah, a good discovery at the start of the season. The music changes considerably, with the Bianconeri increasing in intensity, giving the impression of wanting to impact the match in a different way. After 8 minutes, a nice ball from Arizala from midfield to Davis who controls well on the right, passes Bella-Kotchap well and serves excellently for Bayo who finds a way to celebrate again at the far right post, this time closer to the home fans.

The match has fewer shocks, with the Friulians in control and Stroppa’s boys unable to create particular dangers for the debuting Mrozek. The attempts worth mentioning are from Rrhamani and Sohm, but the Polish goalkeeper has no particular problems.
