UEFA boss is not running against Infantino himself: Aleksander Ceferin is aiming for another term in Europe

Aleksander Ceferin is seeking another term as president of the European Football Union Uefa and is running for re-election next April. According to dpa information, the Slovenian announced his application at a meeting in Berlin and is thus officially eliminated as a possible opponent of Gianni Infantino for the office of FIFA President. Ceferin has recently repeatedly rejected ambitions to challenge the controversial head of the world association.

The election for four more years will take place at the UEFA Congress on April 22nd in Astana, Kazakhstan. There is currently no opposing candidate; such a candidate would currently have no chance in the fight against the respected Ceferin, who has been in office since September 2016.

One of the most urgent tasks for the UEFA president remains to orchestrate the opposition to Infantino in the power struggle over the future of the world association. Associations in Europe in particular have withdrawn their trust in the FIFA boss.

Infantino is under massive pressure after an ultimately failed attempt to market the World Cup rights by external investors in the summer. He recently reacted to this and offered his opponents talks about possible reforms in FIFA for the first time.

So far there is no opponent for Infantino from Europe

European football has not yet been able to present a rival candidate for Infantino in the FIFA presidential election in March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. The opposition has until the end of November 18th to officially name a candidate.

A new UEFA candidacy for Ceferin will be made possible by a statue change in 2024. A term limit of twelve years is anchored in the regulations of the continental association. Because Ceferin took over his first term in office from Michel Platini, who was banned at the time, this no longer counts after the adjustment.

Ceferin actually announced two and a half years ago that he did not want to compete again because he was “tired” and UEFA needed “fresh blood”. However, he revised this opinion relatively quickly internally and now announced his renewed candidacy at the top meeting in Berlin.
