Fifa plans a large development fund of almost 6.35 billion dollars

Fifa intends to propose a development plan worth 6.35 billion dollars for the next four years at a meeting of its Council on Thursday. In order to finance the increase of this development fund for the cycle 2027-2030, which would enable the distribution of funds among its 211 national associations and among regional confederations, Fifa would partially use its financial reserves after the commercially extremely successful World Cup in 2026.

The plan provides for the payment of $25 million to each of the 211 national associations, which represents a significant increase compared to previous estimates.

The announcement came a month after Aleksander Čeferin, the president of European football’s federation (Uefa), and Victor Montagliani, the head of CONCACAF (the confederation for North, Central America and the Caribbean), called on FIFA to pay each confederation an additional “at least $10 million”.

The plan should be approved on Thursday in Zurich, where Fifa President Gianni Infantino and the other 36 Council members are meeting behind closed doors starting at 11am.

This meeting of the Council, the first since April 28, is being held in the context of a crisis in the management of world football, after Infantino expressed this summer his desire to open FIFA to private investment.

That plan was eventually abandoned due to numerous criticisms, led by resistance from UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC (Asia).

At the end of September, Infantino launched a consultation with the member associations on reforming the way FIFA works, announcing that the initial proposals could be discussed by the council. at the Council session on Thursday.

Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is running for a new term in March 2027. His opponents have so far not been able to agree on a common candidate: Eferin is seeking another term at UEFA, and according to several media reports, Montagliani is expected to do the same in to CONCACAF. The deadline for submitting candidacies is November 18.
