Angelique Kerber says yes to the Berlin Ladies Open

The German tennis star Angelique Kerber will also be playing at the grass tournament in Berlin shortly before Wimbledon. The former world number one, who has now returned to the tour after an 18-month maternity break, has given her start confirmation to the organizers of the WTA 500 tournament at the facility in Berlin’s Grunewald.

“Playing in Germany is always something special, and anyone who knows me knows that I will leave my heart on the pitch,” the 36-year-old was quoted as saying in a statement from the organizers on Thursday.

For tournament director Barbara Rittner, Kerber’s participation is “an absolute highlight. I am sure she will have a good grass season. I know what she plans to do – and grass is simply her surface.”

Before Kerber, Japan’s tennis star Naomi Osaka had already confirmed her participation in the tournament. Other top players are also expected at the event from June 15th to 23rd who want to prepare for the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon, which begins on July 1st.
