Rome and the Giro d'Italia, the stage in the shadow of the Colosseum revealed

The last stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia was revealed this morning in Campidoglio, which will end for the second consecutive time in Rome on 26 May. A circuit 9.5 kilometers long for a total of 125 kilometers to be covered by the runners who will start from EUR, then move to Ostia (this year there is the novelty of passing along the seafront), until returning back among the beauties of the city of Rome where there will be 8 laps around the historic center with arrival in front of the Colosseum in via di San Gregorio.

“It will be a stage for sprinters and the games for the pink jersey will already be over – explains Mauro Vegni, Giro d’Italia director – starting from EUR and then passing along Via Cristoforo Colombo and arriving in Ostia where we will first pass part of the town hall “Then we will return to the Zodiac fountain, then again along Colombo the caravan will arrive at via di San Gregorio. The finish line will be in via di San Gregorio – he adds – and there will be eight laps in which the cyclists will pass through iconic places such as the Colosseum, Imperial Forums, Via del Plebiscito, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Lungotevere, Circo Massimo, Aventino, Porta Galena; then the caravan will return towards Piazza di Porta Capena and then arrive at Via di San Gregorio. Eight laps of 9.5 kilometers for a total of 125 kilometers with departure at 3.45pm and arrival at 6.45pm”, he concludes.

“It is the second time in a row that the Giro ends in Rome. We consider the Giro one of the most classic events not only in cycling: a moment that creates national identity. We think that the Capital is the ideal place to end it. Rome gives a lot at the Giro but the Giro also gives a lot to Rome. Very strong direct and indirect economic impact. The images go around the world and also make Rome the capital of sport. The Giro represents the national-popular and at the same time international and global tradition.

We will work to repeat last year’s success”. This was said by the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri speaking, together with the councilor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion Alessandro Onorato, the president of RCS Urbano Cairo and the director of the Giro d’Italia Mauro Vegni at the press conference to present the route of the final Roman stage of the 107 Giro d’Italia 2024 in Campidoglio in the Sala della Protomoteca. “It will be a great celebration of sport, green, sustainable – he adds – and for this reason we believe that the Giro is an event which also interprets this transition. This year we have the novelty of the passage on the Ostia seafront. It must be understood that Rome is a seaside city – underlines the mayor – it overlooks the sea and there is a little-known and beautiful sea. So a journey with two strong points: 8 laps in the centre, in the most beautiful iconic places in the world, and on the other side the pine forest and the seafront of Ostia, the naturalistic part. We show the face of Rome at 360 degrees. The Giro in Rome is important and allows us to be fully capital, a great opportunity for this city”. The one hundred and seventh edition of the race, valid as a test of the UCI World Tour 2024, will take place in twenty-one stages from 4 to 26 May 2024 for a total of 3,321.2 km starting from Venaria Reale, in Piedmont, and arriving with the final stage for the second consecutive year in Rome.
