Monza-Atalanta 1-2, Gasperini chases Roma and the Champions League

Precious victory for Atalanta on the Monza pitch 2-1 in the postponed matchday 33 of the 2023-2024 Serie A. The success allows the Nerazzurri to rise to 54 points and chase the fifth place occupied by Roma. Monza, which no longer has anything to ask for from the championship, remains at 43.

The match

Monza immediately went forward, with Kyriakopoulos coming close to a dangerous low cross from the right in the second minute, the opportunity vanished. We see Atalanta in the eighth minute with Kolasinac (Di Gregorio did well to close the shot) and in the ninth minute, with Holm who from three quarters serves Tourè, a header wide. The hosts came close to scoring in the 36th minute with Zerbin, his right-footed shot from outside the area was blocked by Carnesecchi. As the action continued, Colpani freed himself well but his left-footed shot ended up on the outside of the net.

In the 41st minute the Bergamo team responds with De Ketelaere, a left-footed cross and Di Gregorio saves, then the home defense clears. It is the prelude to the goal that arrives in the 44th minute: from a corner kick, De Ketelaere himself takes time from Gagliardini and scores with a diving header. The first half ends with the guests in the lead.

In the second half, in the 51st minute, Atalanta was close to doubling the lead with Lookman, a deflected shot and Di Gregorio sent it into a corner. Four minutes later Gagliardini headed over Kyriakopoulos’s cross from the left.

In the 72nd minute the Dea scores again: Tourè triangulates quickly with Lookman, who returns the ball to him from the outside to throw into the net. End of the match with Monza projected forward in search of the goal that would reopen the match. Maldini succeeded in the 89th minute with an angled shot from distance which ends up on the left of Carnesecchi. Another curling shot, in the last breath of the match, could have given Monza an equaliser, but the ball crashed into the post and Atalanta took a precious victory, albeit with the final thrill.
