A referee wears a camera for the first time in the history of the English Premier League

The English Premier League said that referee Jared Gillett will wear a camera for the first time in the history of the Premier League during the match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United, today, Monday, as part of filming a promotional program for match referees.

The English Football Association announced last year that it would trial the use of cameras on referees in amateur leagues in England in an attempt to ascertain whether the technology could help “improve participants’ behavior and respect towards referees.”

The German League also used the “referee camera” for the first time during the 2-2 draw between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg last February.

The league said in a statement: “Fans will be able to watch the footage later in the year as part of a program produced by a private league company that aims to enhance understanding and appreciation of refereeing methods in the English Premier League.”

The technology consists of a head-mounted device integrated into the usual referee communications system, and has been approved by the International Football Association Board, the English Premier League, the Referees’ Committee and both clubs to use the technology once for educational purposes.
