Forest radiation deer – also known as dwarf deer – is one of the eight species of deer, mainly found in Asia. Radiation deer does not have horns, but the male has a large fangs to form ivory like the blade that uses females in the mating season.
Dwarf Deer can secrete a precious natural fragrance – musk. This is an expensive natural aroma, used in the cosmetic industry, and also has the value of medicinal herbs in Eastern medicine.
Radioma deer is a risk of extinction, with the remaining number of individuals in Vietnam. It is estimated that by 2023, Vietnam still has about 50 individuals, distributed mainly in Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan … Although the number is still very low, this species still faces great pressure from hunting and trapping, as well as fragmentation of the environment.
After this finding, Fauna & Flora will conduct data analysis to estimate the size of the deer population in Cao Bang, and work with the local community to place the image trap system to record data on other species, such as Asian black bears.
