The trial against Mercedes Benz began on Tuesday before the regional court in Stuttgart on suspicion that they knowingly misled consumers by manipulating data on the amount of harmful substances in exhaust gases.
The Federal Office for Consumer Protection accuses Mercedes-Benz of having committed the criminal offense of knowingly deceiving consumers by knowingly manipulating diesel engines, who in that case would be entitled to compensation.
Three years ago, the car company from Stuttgart invited owners of the GLK and GLC models to the workshops to correct the error with the results and wrong values of harmful substances in the exhaust gases, but the management claimed that it was an accidental and not a deliberate error.
“We believe that the individual claims for compensation as well as the sample lawsuit are unfounded,” Mercedes Benz said ahead of the start of the process.
Over 25,000 lawsuits have been filed in Germany against that car company due to engine manipulation, but, as announced by Mercedes, the lawsuits were rejected in 95 percent of cases.
The judgments concluded that devices were installed in the engines that manipulate data on exhaust gases, but that Mercedes-Benz’s intention to harm the parties could not be proven.
There is currently a lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz before the European Court of Justice, which, according to the attorney general at this court, has a chance of success.
