Metro 2039 brings the nuclear nightmare beneath Moscow’s soil

The gaming landscape is preparing to return to the depths of the Russian metropolis with the official announcement of Metro 2039, scheduled for the next winter season on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. The development, managed by 4A Games, promises to keep intact the formula that made the franchise famous, focusing on a single-player campaign characterized by claustrophobic atmospheres and a marked component of psychological horror. During the presentation, the first technical details were shown that highlight high-level visual fidelity, with a combined use of real-time gameplay and cinematic sequences to illustrate the iconic arsenal and new mutant threats.

The narrative moves forward in time describing a profoundly changed underground, where historical factions have been unified under the aegis of the Novoreich. Leading this new political entity is Hunter, well known to fans of the series, who here takes on the role of an authoritarian leader capable of subjugating communities through propaganda and widespread control of the tunnels. In this scenario the player takes on the role of the Stranger, a protagonist tormented by nocturnal visions who, unlike previous chapters, will be fully voiced to ensure more direct emotional involvement and a more layered narrative.

The genesis of the work inevitably reflects the difficult conditions in which the development team finds itself, composed largely of Ukrainian professionals who operate between the offices of Kyiv and Malta. The ongoing war conflict has profoundly influenced the writing of the game, leading the authors to focus more on the themes of moral choice and the human cost necessary for survival. Metro 2039 therefore presents itself as a work which, while maintaining the aesthetic and playful canons of tradition, intends to offer a more mature and current reflection, filtered through the specific perspective of its original studio.
