What happened to Windows games, why they killed Pinball 3D and where did Minesweeper go?

Before giving the answer, you have to understand that all this started a long time ago: Windows 1.0, released in 1985, included Reversi. Windows 3.0 added Solitaire in 1990 and Windows 3.1 added Minesweeper two years later. Starting with Windows 95, FreeCell and other titles arrived that ended up becoming part of the identity of the operating system.

Those games also served a practical function. When Microsoft celebrated 30 years of Solitaire, it remembered that the program helped new users get familiar with the mouse and, in particular, with the gesture of dragging and dropping elements on a screen. The cards offered a simple way to learn an interaction that was still novel in the early 1990s.

The collection reached its peak with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft revamped Solitaire, Minesweeper, and FreeCell and added Chess Titans, Mahjong Titans y Purble Place. At Vista’s presentation at the 2007 CES, the company touted those titles as an integral part of the system.

But by then one of the most remembered Windows XP games was already missing. 3D Pinball: Space Cadet had disappeared and never officially returned. Its story was different from that of the rest of the classics and was plagued by a programming error, difficult to maintain code and a license written many years before the existence of app stores.

Here, the history of these games and why they were “dying”, as well as how to “revive” them.

Space Cadet had not originally been created by Microsoft. It was one of the three tables Full Tilt! Pinballa game developed by Cinematronics and published by Maxis in 1995. Microsoft obtained a license, adapted that table and incorporated it first into the Microsoft Plus! package. for Windows 95. Later it appeared in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Me y Windows XP.

His disappearance generated different explanations for years. One of the most repeated versions pointed out a legal conflict. Raymond Chen, a veteran engineer involved in Windows development for more than three decadessaid that the initial reason had been technical.

Chen gave the explanation in December 2012 on The Old New Thing, his blog hosted within Microsoft’s official developer site. According to him, during the work to bring Windows XP from 32 to 64 bits, The team found a serious flaw in Pinball.

Two engineers tried to find the source of the problem. The code was several years old, had been written by an outside company, and contained almost no comments explaining how it worked. Chen assured that they were not even able to precisely locate the part responsible for detecting the collisions.

The team still had millions of lines of Windows to adapt and couldn’t spend several days studying a bug that was possibly related to differences in floating-point calculations between the two architectures. ““We made the executive decision right there to eliminate Pinball from the product.”Chen wrote.

The story received a later clarification. In an update published in 2022, the engineer explained that the most serious bug had appeared in an experimental version of 64-bit Windows for Alpha AXP processors. Someone later fixed the problem, possibly through changes to the compiler or the rounding mode used by the system, and Pinball eventually worked on some 64-bit editions of Windows.. Chen maintained that no one informed him that the game had been recovered and that he assumed it had disappeared forever.

The technical error explains the initial decision, although it falls short of understanding why Space Cadet never returned in modern versions. Microsoft tried to revive it years later through a internal Microsoft Garage project. The developers managed to repackage the 32-bit edition, but the legal department encountered another obstacle.

The license signed with Cinematronics authorized Microsoft to include the game in Windows 95Microsoft Plus! and its successor products. It was not contemplated to be launched as an independent application. Chen revealed in 2018 that this restriction prevented it from being published in the Microsoft Store and also from releasing its source code.

Minesweeper took a similar path. Microsoft maintains an official version for Windows with classic mode, different difficulty levels, daily challenges and an adventure mode. It must be downloaded separately and no longer appears as a small file embedded within the operating system.

Microsoft Mahjong also survived as an app, while FreeCell and Spider were absorbed into Solitaire Collection. The current Microsoft Casual Games catalog also includes SudokuJigsaw, Treasure Hunt, Wordament and a collection of word games.

Other names were less lucky. Hearts, Chess Titans, InkBall and Purble Place They lack equivalent official successors within the current catalog. Numerous recreations developed by third parties appear in the Microsoft Store, but sharing the name or imitating the look of the classics does not make them Microsoft products.

Windows games were thus divided into three groups. Solitaire, FreeCell, Spider, Minesweeper and Mahjong survived as free apps with advertising and connected services. Other titles were replaced by third-party alternatives. Space Cadet was caught between an old technical problem and a contract that prevents it from being sold or given away separately.

Microsoft continues to make games for PC and made Windows one of the bases of its Xbox ecosystem. What disappeared was that simple collection that accompanied each installation and worked from the first beginning, even on a computer without an Internet connection.
