The CEO of OpenAI defends that the benefits of AI justify accepting that negative things happen

The director of the AI ​​laboratory, Sam Altman, in an interview with Politico’s Decoded, has stated that they believe “that the world should accept certain negative aspects in exchange for the benefits of this technology and that people have autonomy”, although OpenAI itself joined Anthropic a few weeks ago to put the “brake” on the development of AI capabilities.

A declaration of intent by Altman that makes your position clear against a rival such as Anthropic, which is considered one of the promoters of strict application of regulations to AI in the industry.

In recent months, the distance between both AI laboratories has been shortened regarding regulation and safety of models, although Altman continues to build walls between the two in a statement collected by the aforementioned media in which he criticizes Anthropic’s vision of concentrating AI control in a single laboratory.

“I don’t agree, but I understand the perspective of those who think something like, ‘This technology is going to be so powerful and it’s so dangerous that a single lab in San Francisco should own it and make sure that nothing bad happens, somehow managing how to distribute its benefits,'” Altman said.

In fact, the CEO of OpenAI thinks that “people will do good things in an enormously greater proportion – orders of magnitude – than bad things”, in reference to the fact that he would not agree to give up the benefits of AI in exchange for ensuring that there are no major cyberattacks, misuse of technology, scams or other bad things, which, in his opinion, are going to happen.

However, Altman has qualified that in no way accepts the possible catastrophic risksamong which has included a serious loss of control over artificial intelligence.

For its part, an Anthropic spokesperson, asked by Politico about this, has assured that its regulatory proposals only apply to cutting-edge models.
