Joe Biden signed law forcing TikTok to sell its app or face a ban in the US | TECHNOLOGY

The United States Senate approved the law to block TikTok on Tuesday night, and the next day, President Joe Biden signed it for immediate implementation.

The law establishes a period of ByteDance 270 days to find an investor from a country that is not a “foreign adversary” to sell the company to. Otherwise, the application will be blocked in the United States in stores and services.

For their part, from the platform they indicated that they will take the law approved by the United States Congress to court.

This unconstitutional law means a ban on TikTok and we will challenge it in court. We believe that the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and that we will ultimately prevail”TikTok stated in a statement.

Likewise, he noted that an eventual ban would have a “devastating” impact on 7 million companies in the United States and would affect 170 million Americans who use the platform.

It is important to note that the law was passed as part of a set of measures that includes military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, among others. The law obtained support with 79 votes in favor and only 18 against.

The arguments for blocking TikTok in the United States are due to fears that China could obtain information from users in the US through ByteDance and manipulate what users see on the app to influence public opinion.

So far TikTok and ByteDance have indicated that they have no intention of selling the company and have stated that “the platform contributes $24 billion annually to the United States economy” and 60% of its shares belong to global institutional investors.
