In Vietnam, thousands of hectares of natural dipterocarp forests – a typical type of broad-leaved sparse forest found only in the Central Highlands provinces, bring socio-economic benefits, contributing to maintaining ecological balance. The dipterocarp ecosystem is home to many large mammals such as elephants, bison, gaur, and many precious birds such as peacocks and pheasants.

According to research reports from the General Department of Forestry and the University of Forestry, in recent years the dipterocarp forest ecosystem has not been exploited properly and scientifically, causing a sharp decline in area. In the Central Highlands region, in the period 2015-2020, the area of dipterocarp forest in 2020 is at 305,651.69 hectares, down from 355,223.52 hectares in 2015. Among them, Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces saw the strongest decrease with a total area decrease of 15,642.12 hectares and 33,572.30 hectares, respectively. The average annual decrease in these two provinces is 3,100 – 6,700 hectares/year. In addition, understanding of the ecological and social conditions of the dipterocarp forest ecosystem in the Central Highlands is still limited, leading to ineffective management, protection and development of the dipterocarp forest ecosystem.

In addition to the task of restoring dipterocarp forests, Gia Lai also makes other proposals such as excavation, research, conservation consulting, promoting the value of the An Khe Paleolithic relic system, implementing projects and tasks. science and technology services under the national program, improving local capacity and potential.
