Austrians keep their eyes on the Danube and fear a historic flood: They expect record amounts of rain

Meteorologists in Austria expect heavy rainfall in the coming days, with potential floods and landslides, according to the state meteorological institute Geosphere Austria on Friday.

From Friday to Tuesday, 100 to 200 milliliters of rain could fall in most of the Alpine country, while some parts of Lower and Upper Austria could see about 300 milliliters.

Emergency services duž The Danube is preparing for rare flood levels that usually occur once a decade or less, according to the authorities. People set up mobile flood protection systems and filled sandbags.

Passengers were told to expect delays at the airport in Vienna on Friday. “Due to the current bad weather conditions in various European locations and in Beč, there are currently isolated delays in departures from Beč airport,” the report states.

In the mountains, snow caused the closure of local roads, and Salzburg warned of the danger of avalanches.

Several outdoor concerts and football games were canceled due to the storms.
