Media: Women without hijab are increasingly seen on the streets of Iran

On the eve of the second anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the morality police for violating the rules of wearing a hijab, women without headscarves can increasingly be seen on the streets of Iranian cities, writes the Times of Israel, citing AP.

There is no government official who acknowledges this phenomenon, but videos regularly appear on Iranian social media sites in which women and girls with long hair flowing down their shoulders are visible.

Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, promised during his election campaign to end the harassment of women by the morality police. But the country’s top authority remains 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has said in the past that “women’s uncovered faces are forbidden for both religious and political reasons.”

In 2022, Amini’s death sparked mass opposition protests, in which women played a central role.
