US President-elect Donald Trump intends to nominate Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the post of US Secretary of State, American media reported on Monday evening, citing sources close to Trump.
The son of Cuban immigrants, 53-year-old Marco Rubio is one of the most prominent supporters of US foreign policy. He is known for his strong criticism of authoritarian regimes, particularly the Chinese, Iranian, and Cuban regimes.
During Trump’s first presidential term, Rubio was one of the initiators of the bill that made the US withdrawal from NATO more complicated.
Rubio was also one of 15 Republican senators who voted against the $95 billion aid package for Ukraine in April of this year. In his recent interviews, he stated that Ukraine should work towards reaching an agreement with Russia, even if it does not lead to the return of all the territories occupied by Russia.
Sources of The New York Times emphasize that the decision on the appointment of Marco Rubio can be changed at the last moment.
It was announced earlier that Trump intends to appoint Michael Waltz, a member of Congress elected from Florida, as his national security adviser. Trump also plans to appoint New York congresswoman Alice Stefanik as the US representative to the United Nations.
