Asunción (Paraguay) – It was Sunday at 12:25 p.m. when Eugenio V. (68) started to overtake in his dark VW Touareg on the country road to San Bernardino. A decision with fatal consequences: four people died, including a German diplomat.
Images from a surveillance camera captured the crash: On the opposite lane, the VW crashed head-on into the small red Kia in which the German consul Kristin B. was traveling with her husband and two children, ramming it off the road before crashing head-on into a Hyundai crashes that comes towards him.
Kristin B., her husband Osvaldo J. and their son Phillipe (2) died at the scene of the accident. The only survivor in the small car was the couple’s daughter (8), who is fighting for her life in a hospital in Asunción with serious injuries to her lungs and spleen. A passenger in the Hyundai was also killed in the horrific crash. The driver of the accident, Eugenio V., survived injured.
The family only came to Paraguay in June
It wasn’t until June that they were from Kronach (Bayern) from Kristin B. and her from Paraguay husband and children from Lima (Peru) moved to the German embassy in the capital Asunción to take care of consular matters there. According to local media, the family wanted to stay in Paraguay for four years.
The dark VW first rammed the diplomat’s Kia, then a gray Hyundai
“After almost ten years abroad, he finally wanted to be with us. We had so many plans,” the sister of the killed husband told the TV station NPY. “It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our dear colleague, her husband and son,” she wrote German embassy in Asuncion on their website.
The driver of the accident, Eugenio V. (68), swerved into the oncoming lane in a long curve despite the ban on overtaking and also had alcohol in his blood. “Witnesses say that the man had overtaken recklessly and at high speed a few kilometers earlier,” said the responsible commissioner, Rene Aquino, on the ABC TV station.
An arrest warrant was issued against the driver involved in the accident.
