On the issue of preventing illegal migration, the newly elected US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with the newly elected President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

On his Truth social media page, Trump wrote that Sheinbaum agreed to prevent migration through Mexico to the United States by effectively closing the southern border.

“We also discussed possible measures to stop the massive inflow of drugs into the United States, as well as their consumption in the United States,” wrote Trump, describing the conversation with the Mexican president as very effective.

Two days ago, Trump warned that after taking office (on January 20, 2025), he would impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.

According to him, this decree will remain in force until neighboring countries stop “the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs, primarily fentanyl, into the United States.”

In his first interview after being re-elected, he mentioned the fight against illegal migrants as a priority. The Wall Street Journal estimates that the deportations could affect about 20 million immigrants.
