South Korean President Announces He Will End Martial Law

Sky News reported that South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol announced that he would lift the martial law imposed a few hours ago. A government meeting is due to take place in the coming hours.

The president announced the introduction of martial law in a televised address to the people. He accused the opposition of trying to undermine the constitutional order with the help of North Korea and using control over parliament. He argued that martial law was being introduced to protect against “the threat posed by communist North Korea.”

Following this announcement, demonstrators began gathering outside the parliament building to protest the move.

South Korea’s parliament voted to lift martial law, but the army said only the president could reverse his decision.
