Estonia prime minister resigns to form new government

In Estonia, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has offered the resignation of her government. She announced this in a press release on the government’s website. A special session will be held in parliament on Friday, in which she will ask for a mandate to form a new coalition with the small Christian Democrat party Isamaa (‘Fatherland’) and the Social Democratic Party.

Kallas expelled the Center Party, its coalition partner, from government in early June after it sided with a far-right group in parliament to oppose primary education reform. That was about making Estonian in schools, while almost a quarter of the population in Estonia is of Russian descent, Reuters news agency reported.

Kallas’ liberal Reform Party then began coalition talks with Isamaa and the Social Democrats. The coalition has 56 seats in the 101-seat parliament.

The prime minister also informed the president of her decision on Thursday, as required by the constitution. Parliament will vote on the new coalition on Friday. The next elections in Estonia are scheduled for March 2023.
