The United States and Israel attack the headquarters of Iran’s presidential election council

“The US and Israel attacked the Council of Experts building in Qom,” the news agency said Tasnim of Iran reported on March 3. Video appeared on social networks the same day showing the building being heavily damaged in the raid.

Iran’s Assembly of Experts consists of 88 people, responsible for electing, supervising and possibly dismissing the supreme leader. According to Mehr news agency, this agency no longer meets at the building in Qom city.

Tasnim also said that the Council of Experts complex in Tehran, which is the former headquarters of the Islamic Consultative Council, was also attacked by US and Israeli airstrikes overnight. The casualties and damage in the two above-mentioned air strikes are unknown.

On the same day, American and Israeli fighters also attacked locations around the Islamic Revolution Square in Tehran, with specific targets unknown. According to Iranian media, many houses in this area suffered significant damage.

Iranian officials on March 1 announced the start of the transition process after confirming that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had died.

An interim leadership council has been established, including the President of Iran, the judiciary leader and a jurist from the Guardian Council, which oversees the legislative branch and vets election candidates. This body will lead Iran until the next supreme leader is elected.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched an air campaign against Iran, targeting intelligence and defense agencies and a series of senior officials in this country. Iran then launched missiles and drones (UAVs) at Israel and US bases in the area in retaliation.

On March 3, the Iranian Red Crescent Society announced that 787 people died in the country because of the conflict. At least 11 people in Israel, 6 US soldiers and many people in Middle Eastern countries died.
