British Under Salt Marsh is not the first crime drama where the death and/or disappearance of a child tests a tight-knit community, and it will hardly be the last. A crime against a child and the cover-up of the crime are an effective means of shocking the viewer, and the effect does not seem to be waning. Series after series trusts that the human capacity for evil cannot be revealed any more uglier than when it tarnishes perfect innocence.
