“A powerful way to recognize his achievements”: Trump will have his signature on dollar bills, a first

Donald Trump’s signature will appear on future American bank notes, the Treasury announced Thursday, a first for a sitting United States president. The first $100 bills bearing the new signature will be printed in June. It will then be extended to other denominations, specifies the government press release.

Since 1861, only the signatures of the American Minister of Finance and the Treasurer of the United States appeared on greenbacks. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald Trump than dollar bills bearing his name,” said Finance Minister Scott Bessent, quoted in the press release.

This announcement is part of a series of decisions aimed at putting Donald Trump’s imprint on numerous buildings or symbols of the United States, sparking accusations of a cult of personality. On March 19, a federal commission of fine arts, all of whose members were appointed by Donald Trump, gave the green light to the minting of a commemorative gold coin bearing the president’s likeness.

Several public buildings have already been renamed in the Republican’s name since his return to the White House last year, such as the Kennedy Center, a renowned cultural institution in Washington. And in Florida, the Palm Beach International Airport must also change its name to that of Donald Trump, under the law adopted by the parliamentarians of this southeastern state, where his private residence is located.
