The EU considers the attacks against UNIFIL in Lebanon “totally unacceptable” and calls for an investigation

The European Commission has condemned this Tuesday the “totally unacceptable” attacks against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that have caused the death of several ‘blue helmets’ in the south of the country and has demanded an “exhaustive” investigation to clarify what happened.

“We condemn the attacks that have resulted in the death of UNIFIL troops and the injury of others,” said the community spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Anuar El Anouni, who has also denounced the incidents registered in recent days against the French contingent, in the midst of the intensification of military operations in Lebanese territory.

Likewise, he stressed that a “thorough investigation be carried out to shed light on these serious attacks” which, he stressed, “constitute a serious violation of international law, are totally unacceptable and must stop immediately.”

“We, as the European Union, reiterate our unwavering support for UNIFIL, which is a fundamental force for the stabilization of Lebanon,” said the community spokesperson, who highlighted the role of the mission, deployed in the south of the country to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese Armed Forces, and which in recent days has been the subject of several attacks, including bombings and explosions against its troops.

Specifically, the reaction in Brussels comes after at least three Indonesian soldiers from the UN mission have died in recent hours in the south of the country, in an area marked by the presence of both Hezbollah militias and the Israeli Army and in which several incidents against international forces have been recorded.
