Mexico: attack that killed Canadian tourist and injured several other visitors was “planned”

The assailant had prepared his disastrous action. The shooting at the site of the Teotihuacan pyramids, a major tourist attraction in Mexico which left one dead and thirteen injured on Monday, had been “planned” by the shooter who then committed suicide, the attorney general of the State of Mexico said on Tuesday.

“It wasn’t spontaneous,” Jose Luis Cervantes Martinez said.

The shooter, a 27-year-old Mexican, Julio César Jasso Ramirez, “had gone to the archaeological site several times to scout it, had stayed in nearby hotels before the incident and had planned his actions,” the prosecutor said during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference.

A child among the injured

A Canadian tourist was killed and at least 13 foreign tourists were injured, six hit by bullets, including a six-year-old child.

In all, three Colombians, a Canadian, two Brazilians, six Americans, and a Russian were injured.

The assailant opened fire around noon on this busy site in the center of the country, less than two months before the 2026 Football World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

During the same press conference, Claudia Sheinbaum called for stronger controls to prevent the introduction of “firearms onto an archaeological or tourist site”. “It is obvious that we need to strengthen security,” she conceded.
