Reuters: Lebanon proposes extending ceasefire with Israel by 20-40 days

At talks in Washington, Lebanon intends to propose extending the current ceasefire with Israel for a period of 20 to 40 days. This was reported by Reuters, citing an informed source and a statement from the administration of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. According to the agency, Beirut is also going to demand an end to Israeli bombings and demolitions of houses in southern Lebanese villages.

The second round of US-mediation talks between Israel and Lebanon comes amid ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon. The current 10-day U.S.-brokered truce is due to expire in the coming days, and the Lebanese side expects to use the extra time to discuss broader issues, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the return of detainees and border demarcation.

In Beirut, differences remain over the negotiations themselves: Hezbollah opposes direct dialogue with Israel, while President Aoun insists on a diplomatic solution.

The meeting in Washington is being held with the participation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
