The Armenian community of Georgia was not allowed to hold an action near the Turkish Embassy

The Armenian community of Georgia announced that it did not receive permission to hold a peaceful protest near the Turkish Embassy on the day of remembrance of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

According to “Echo Kavkaza” service of “Azatutyun” radio station, Zhaneta Baghdasaryan, a member of the community board, said that they sent a written application to the Tbilisi Municipality and the Ministry of Internal Affairs within the specified time, but they were refused to hold the action in the given place.

According to Baghdasaryan, the answer states that according to the law of Georgia on assemblies and demonstrations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is obliged to ensure a balance between the freedom of assembly and the rights of people who live, work or do business in the places of action. The continuation of the activities of these persons should not be restricted.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is also required to strike a balance between freedom of assembly and public safety, order, transport and free movement of citizens, as well as other human rights and freedoms, the response said.

“The Armenian community refuses to hold the action in another place, we are not considering holding the action at any other address than the area near the Turkish embassy. That is why we are not going to hold anything,” said Baghdasaryan.

The community also stated that “these practices do not meet the standards of the rule of law and undermine trust in state institutions.”

The community emphasized that their goal was to “hold a peaceful demonstration aimed at preserving the historical memory, honoring the memory of the victims of the genocide and calling for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.”

Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs satisfied the application of the Armenian community of Georgia on April 6 and allowed the march from the “Isani” metro station to the yard of Saint Etchmiadzin Church in Havlabar.
