Iran nominated to lead UN conference on nuclear non-proliferation

The 11th Conference on Monitoring Compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons began its work at the UN building in New York. She will have to elect 34 vice-presidents. From the non-aligned states, the Vietnamese delegation nominated an Iranian representative to this post.

The initiative drew protest from the American delegation, which called the initiative outrageous, offensive and contrary to the principles of the non-proliferation treaty.

“There is no doubt that Iran has a long history of contempt for the treaty and the responsibilities it imposes. It has refused to cooperate with the IAEA or answer questions about its own program,” said US Representative Christopher Yeo, under secretary for arms control.

“These statements are groundless and politically motivated. The United States is the only country that has used nuclear weapons. The United States continues to build up its nuclear arsenal and is also trying to take the position of an international arbiter,” said Reza Najafi, Iran’s representative to the IAEA.
