Ukraine mocks Russia for attack after Putin suggests truce

“It is pure cynicism to call for a ceasefire and hold propaganda celebrations while carrying out missile and drone attacks every day until then,” Zelensky said in a statement.

“Russia could cease fire at any time, and that would end the war and our (military) responses,” he added.

Russia had proposed a temporary truce in the war during the Victory Day celebrations, between May 8 and 9, when the anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 will be celebrated.

Last week, citing fear of the “terrorist threat” from Ukraine, the Kremlin said that the parade in Moscow will take place without the presence of tanks, artillery pieces and missiles, which has not happened since 2007.

In response to Russia’s ceasefire proposal, Zelensky announced that Ukraine would make a truce from Wednesday (6).

The attack mentioned by Zelensky took place last night, when missiles and drones were fired at the Poltava region in east-central Ukraine.

According to the EFE agency, the local governor, Vitali Diakivnich, said that at least four people died and another 31 were injured in the bombing, which targeted industrial infrastructure and left around 3,500 users of the system without gas supply.

The attack also caused damage to railway infrastructure, the governor added.

Putin has proposed several temporary truces since the war with Ukraine began in February 2022, but Kiev says Moscow always disregards these pauses, as occurred during Orthodox Easter in April.
