The Parliament of Romania approved this Tuesday a motion of censure against the Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, following a proposal presented by social democrats and ultranationalists after the fracture of the European coalition made up of four formations, which left an Executive in a minority at the end of April precisely after the departure of the same by the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
“After the adoption by vote of the motion of censure initiated by 254 deputies and senators, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, meeting in joint session under article 113 of the Constitution of Romania, have withdrawn the confidence granted to the Government,” said the legislature in a message published through social networks.
In this way, the Bolojan Executive remains in an interim situation until the new Government is formed, for which the president, Nicusor Dan, must now initiate contacts with the parties with parliamentary representation to designate a candidate for prime minister who can begin these efforts.
According to information collected by the Romanian newspaper ‘Adevarul’, the proposed motion of censure has received 281 supports, above the 233 necessary for its adoption. The fall of the Bolojan Government was foreseeable, since the proposal was already presented by more parliamentarians than those necessary for its approval.
During its interim period, the Government cannot issue emergency decrees or present bills, which affects its ability to implement reforms, after weeks of tension due to the Prime Minister’s refusal to resign despite calls in this regard from the Social Democrats, the party with the largest parliamentary representation.
The PSD’s decision to leave the Executive was followed by its alliance with the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to present the motion of censure. The leader of the AUR, George Simeon, has already praised that “the voice of the people of Romania has been heard.” “It is time for national reconciliation,” he added.
“Bolojan’s government has just been overthrown by the Romanian Parliament. An end to ten months during which the self-proclaimed pro-Europeans have delivered nothing but taxes, war and poverty,” he maintained through a message published on social networks, in reference to the tensions in the Executive, caused by Bolojan’s plans to apply austerity measures to reduce the deficit.
The members of the Government that took office in June 2025 – made up of the PSD, the liberals of the National Liberal Party (PNL), the conservatives of the Union Save Romania (USR) and representatives of the Hungarian minority of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) – were sworn into office after receiving the support of Parliament precisely after reaching an agreement focused on reducing the largest budget deficit of the European Union (EU).
Romania, which has been a member of the European Union (EU) since 2007, racked up a total budget deficit of 9% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) under previous governments, well above EU limits, prompting Brussels to threaten to freeze its subsidies.
The formation of the Executive took place after a deep political crisis, accelerated after the triumph against all odds of Calin Georgescu, a far-right pro-Moscow, in the first round of the presidential elections that were finally annulled due to irregular financing of his campaign, also under accusations, although unproven, of foreign interference.
These elections were repeated in May 2025, when Dan, then mayor of the capital, Bucharest, won precisely over Simion, who presented his candidacy after Georgescu was disqualified following the aforementioned decision to suspend the results of the elections, a step harshly criticized by the AUR, which has since continued to rise in the polls.
