According to a court ruling, the video cameras at the entrances to some Berlin outdoor pools and the obligation to show ID do not violate data protection regulations. This was decided by the Berlin administrative court. This proved that the swimming pool companies were right when they had sued against a warning from the data protection officer.
The judge justified the verdict by saying that the interference with the bathers’ rights through the cameras and ID checks was minimal. On the other hand, the many measures introduced for more security were necessary in 2023 because there had previously been frequent tumults and violent incidents in some pools. It is not possible to clearly determine which of the measures would have ensured more security.
