An aircraft carrier group led by the Charles de Gaulle passed the Suez Canal on Wednesday, May 6, and is heading towards the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the French Ministry of Defense said.
France and Britain plan to lead an international maritime mission aimed at ensuring the safe passage of merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The carrier group was deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean shortly after the start of US-Israeli strikes on Iran and is capable of staying at sea for four to five months.
The need for such a mission is confirmed by the ongoing attacks on ships in the strait. On Wednesday, French shipping company CMA CGM said its container ship San Antonio was attacked while passing through the strait on May 5. Several crew members were injured and the ship was damaged. About a fifth of the world’s oil supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and shipping there has been severely disrupted since the conflict began.
