Alarming predictions for an unprecedented climate event in modern history

The climate crisis has been changing the weather on Earth in recent decades, and a climatic phenomenon that is expected to develop in the coming months could accelerate the process and bring with it unprecedented waves of extreme weather. Senior researchers and climate organizations are warning that an “El Nino”, a periodic warming of areas in the ocean, is developing, which may be the strongest ever.

“I think we will see weather events that we have never seen in modern history,” warns Jeff Berardelli, a meteorologist quoted on the Euronews website. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the “El Nino” event is expected to develop from the middle of the year and affect temperature and precipitation patterns worldwide.

“El Nino” (“the boy” in Spanish) is a cyclical and natural warming of areas in the Pacific Ocean, which changes the weather patterns of the world. Now there are signs that “El Niño” is getting closer, and may be stronger than ever. Experts call particularly strong instances of the phenomenon “Super El Niño”, and they are rare.

The WMO’s seasonal climate update shows that sea surface temperatures are rising rapidly. According to the organization, there is a high level of confidence in the development of “El Niño”, and then in its strengthening in the following months. The phenomenon usually occurs once every 2-7 years and lasts about 9 to 12 months.

“El Niño” has significant global effects. Among other things, they often lead to droughts and floods in various parts of Africa, extreme winter storms in the United States and extreme heat waves in large areas of the world.
