Activist Anja Windl: Climate Shakira doesn’t have to go to prison

Vienna (Austria) – The German activist Anja Windl (29), known as Climate Shakira, had to take a seat in the dock again. On Tuesday, a court found the 29-year-old guilty of, among other things, serious damage to property – but she still doesn’t have to go to prison. She gets off with an eight-month suspended sentence.

The woman from Lower Bavaria is considered a central figure in the climate protest movement. In the trial, she and other activists were accused of protest actions in which they stuck themselves to important traffic routes in Austria with sand and superglue. The verdict is not yet final.

Windl, who was part of the former “Last Generation” network, pleaded not guilty, the APA news agency reported. “She is deeply concerned about the consequences of the climate crisis that we are already feeling,” said her lawyer.

A total of 47 former members of the now disbanded “Last Generation” were accused in the major trial in Vienna. Dozens of fines have already been imposed in the process. The three co-defendants who were now convicted along with Windl also received fines.

Attack on government plane planned

Klima-Shakira is also in legal trouble in Germany: In January, she, another woman and a man were arrested at an aircraft hangar in Arnsberg (NRW).
