The Malta Labor Party achieves a historic fourth consecutive term after Saturday’s elections

The Malta Labor Party has won the legislative elections held this Saturday on the island, thereby governing the country for the fourth consecutive term in a historic milestone in Maltese politics.

The general secretary of the Nationalist Party, Charles Bonello, the only rival of the Labor Party, has assured that his estimates give Labor an advantage of between 18,000 and 19,000 votes, with a census of 341,351 people, reports the ‘Malta Independent’ newspaper. Participation was 87.42%, 1.82 points more than in the 2022 elections.

However, if confirmed, this data represents a significant drop compared to the 2022 elections, when the Labor Party won with 55.11% of the vote and 39,000 ballots ahead.

At the moment no official results are known, but Labor interveners have already begun to hit the methacrylate of the centralized counting center in the town of Naxxar, a now traditional gesture of victory in Maltese politics. Immediately, Labor supporters began chanting “Viva l-Labour” celebrating the victory.

The outgoing prime minister and candidate for re-election, Robert Abela, has described the result as a “victory for all Maltese and Gozitans” in statements to public television, TVM. The “historic” fourth term achieved will allow them to “apply the electoral program”, according to Abela, who has asked his followers to celebrate the victory “with respect.”

The count began around 9:00 a.m. this Sunday at the Naxxar Count Center after the ballot boxes arrived from the 852 voting centers distributed throughout Malta and Gozo, the two main islands of the Maltese archipelago. No official results are expected until Sunday night.
