Bus No. 666, known as the “Road to Hel”, has been revived in Poland.

Bus company FlixBus has announced the launch of route 666 to the Polish resort of Hel, once again sparking controversy over the so-called “road to hell,” the BBC reports. Previously, this number was used by the local company PKS Gdynia, but in 2023 the route was renamed 669 after complaints from religious organizations that considered the number 666 “satanic.”

The new FlixBus route, lasting approximately 13 hours, will connect Krakow with Hel and pass through several major cities in Poland, including Warsaw. Company representative Alexander Kalenik explained that number 666 was chosen specifically as a bright marketing move that should attract the attention of tourists to the popular destination.

Previously, PKS Gdynia said that the company’s management had been receiving letters and requests for years to change the line number. Some religious activists even accused the carrier of “propaganda of Satanism.”

The number 666 is known as the “number of the beast” from the Bible, and the name of the Polish resort of Hel is consonant with the English word hell (“hell”), which has become the cause of many jokes and disputes. Hel is located at the end of the 35 km long Hel Peninsula in northern Poland. The resort is known for its sandy beaches, historic architecture and seal rescue centre.
