The EU will provide more than 50 million euros in support to Armenia amid Russian restrictions

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, had a telephone conversation. They discussed the restrictions recently applied by Russia to Armenia. Von der Leyen reports this.

“This is nothing but economic pressure, and it is unacceptable. Europe firmly stands by Armenia. We are preparing a support package,” Laien noted.

According to the president of the European Commission, the package includes immediate financial assistance in the amount of more than 50 million euros. “Regarding the measures to ease the trade of some Armenian products, in particular, agricultural food products. And regarding the practical support of the affected sectors, such as Armenian flowers.”

He informed that a batch of 10,000 flowers will arrive in Latvia tomorrow, which will be followed by other batches.

“The recent reopening of trade routes with Turkey, including the rail link through Georgia and Turkey, is a great step forward. “Armenia has the potential to become a strategic hub connecting Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia,” Layen emphasized.

Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the readiness of the EU to support the development of infrastructure projects and regional communications.

According to the Armenian side, during the telephone conversation, the Parties agreed to create a joint Armenia-EU working group, which will coordinate the implementation of current programs and discuss new directions of cooperation.

According to “Armenpress”, EU Ambassador to Armenia Vasilis Maragos announced today in Yerevan that the EU will provide additional support to Armenia against the background of Russia’s ban and restrictions on the import of some Armenian products.

Before the Armenian parliamentary elections Russia has restricted entry of a number of Armenian products into its market on the grounds of quality inconsistency.
