When the ceasefire in Gaza came into force on October 11, 2025, the agreement left a 53% of the Strip under Israeli military control which would be progressively reduced as the truce progressed and the troops withdrew. Eight months later, the Israeli authorities boast of controlling 60% and aim to reach 70%.
There are also two small population concentrations in the Northern Governorate of Gaza, with about 92,800 people; and in Rafah (south), of just 11,300, both areas being close to the Israeli militarized zone.
The population has been cornered near the coast, where 83% of structures are totally or partially destroyed, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“We must never lose sight of the fact that Israel, as an occupying power, is in control of all of Gaza and has obligations towards the life, dignity and health of the people who live there,” the spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross, Patrick Griffiths, told EFE.
Behind the imaginary line, Israel regularly carries out building demolitions, and under which most of the population’s agricultural territories have also remained.
A report from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on March 26 states that the armed forces have 32 posts in the militarized area, seven of them built next to the yellow line itself since the ceasefire came into force.
“At five Army points in Gaza, the ground has been covered with asphalt, allowing prolonged operational activity,” the article states.
In addition to the Israeli Army, at least seven local militias, armed by Israel and opposed to Hamas, move in the militarized area with their connivance. In some cases, their leaders are former members of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) security forces in Gaza.
The Popular Forces, the largest anti-Hamas militia in the enclave (with about 700 members, according to local sources) and led by Ghassan Al Dahini, are concentrated in Rafah. To the east of this southern city, there is the armed group led by Akram Jargoun, with between 100 and 150 members.
In Khan Yunis the Hussam Al Astal militia operates, with about 150 members, and a little further north, also in the southern city, there are around 50 militiamen led by Shawqi Abu Nasira.
Near the Bureij refugee camp (center) the Issam al Nabahim militia operates, with less than 20 members.
In the capital, Gaza City (north), there is the Rami Helles militia, with between 200 and 250 fighters, and finally to the northwest of Beit Lahia and east of Jabalia the Ashraf Al Mansi gang extends, with about 100 enlisted.
These groups carry out raids on the western side of the yellow line, sometimes to assassinate members of Hamas or its police or, on other occasions, as in recent weeks, to call on the population to leave areas that will become controlled by the Army.
