The US – Iran gave conflicting messages about the potential agreement

Iranian state news agency IRNA today said that after many rounds of revisions, the memorandum of understanding with the US has “actually reached the final stage” based on Iran’s 14-point proposal.

The first is an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, according to IRNA and the semi-official Mehr news agency. The US will “commit to forcing Israel” to end hostilities in Beirut if the agreement is signed.

Nuclear issues will be put aside for later negotiations. Washington wants a deal that ensures Iran never develops nuclear weapons, while Iran insists it does not pursue this goal.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian news agencies emphasized that Tehran is not committed to cede management of the strait or restore the pre-war situation. The memorandum only mentioned “normalization of maritime traffic” on this maritime route and ending the US blockade of Iranian ports. The US will not play any role in strait management, but will only coordinate with coastal countries in the region.

The draft requires the release of $24 billion in Iran’s frozen assets, of which half must be disbursed immediately after signing. News agency IRNA said the document also stated Iran “received specific guarantees from third parties” to receive final payment.

Iran’s request to lift all sanctions against the country will be resolved within 60 days. During that time, the US pledged not to increase military forces in the region or impose new sanctions on Tehran.

Regarding war reparations, Mehr said the document includes a reconstruction plan for Iran totaling at least $300 billion. The specific implementation mechanism will be negotiated within 60 days, according to IRNA.

Mehr added that the provisions on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its proxies “have been removed.”

News agency Tasnimclose to the Revolutionary Guard, said the document “still needs to be reviewed and finalized by relevant authorities in Iran”. News agency Fars said that information about the agreement between the US and Iran being signed in Geneva, Switzerland on June 14 is “completely false”.

However, US President Donald Trump affirmed that the leaked information about the terms in the draft with the US that Iran released was not in accordance with what had been agreed.

“What they say, including their weak and pitiful claims about reaching an agreement, is not the truth. These people are very dishonest when dealing. With them, there is no such thing as a good faith transaction,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Mr. Trump warned “they better correct their actions quickly”.

A White House official told AFP that Iran agreed to dismantle its nuclear program and destroy its stockpile of enriched uranium. This person added that Tehran also agreed to open the strait and not receive any frozen funds until it fulfilled its commitments under the agreement.

A day earlier, Mr. Trump announced he was canceling the plan to strike Iran because he had received a signal that Tehran’s leadership approved the draft agreement. He said the main points of the memorandum have been approved by all relevant parties, including the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said today that the Israeli leader spoke with Mr. Trump and the US President pledged that the agreement would include the removal of enriched uranium stockpiles as well as the dismantling of Iran’s missile infrastructure.

“As long as I am Prime Minister of Israel, Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said.
