Shipowners will not resume passage through the Strait of Hormuz for several more weeks until they are convinced that the agreement between the United States and Iran is “feasible.”
This was stated in an interview with the Financial Times published on June 16 by the chief executive officer of the Japanese shipping company, Mitsui OSK Lines, Zetaro Tamura.
“Not just an ordinary agreement between countries should come into force. It should become significant and reflect the real situation in the Strait of Hormuz, so that shipping companies can feel comfortable when passing through it,” said the head of Mitsui OSK.
The day before, US President Donald Trump announced that the text of the memorandum of understanding with Iran would be published after both sides signed the document in Switzerland. He also promised that the Strait of Hormuz would be fully opened on the same day. The official signing ceremony will take place on Friday, June 19.
