Israel gives in to US pressure and accepts new ceasefire

The negotiations take place after the cancellation of the first contacts between Washington and Tehran, Switzerland. On the one hand, the US said that “logistical problems” prevented the vice president, JD Vance, from going to the European country on the scheduled date, while Iran withdrew from the meeting because of the fighting in Lebanon.

An Israeli source confirmed to the Hebrew press that the ceasefire came into force on this day, but warned that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will remain deployed in the buffer zone in southern Lebanon to respond to any new advance by terrorists.

Later, Israeli Army spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated that troops have “complete freedom of action” to combat any threat in southern Lebanon, amid the new ceasefire.

He detailed that the military continues to operate in the Beaufort Castle area and in the strategic region of Ali Taher, to demolish Hezbollah’s main tunnel systems, which serve as the terrorist group’s “command centers”, according to the IDF.

The fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah has been a crucial point in the rapprochement between the US and Iran, who signed a memorandum of understanding in recent days whose first point includes the end of hostilities in Lebanon. Iran has been warning for weeks that the Lebanese front is one of the red lines that could make the agreement with the US fall apart.
