This is not summer, this is scorching heat. Boiling hot and dangerous as hell. At the weekend, the thermometer is almost certain to break the record ever measured in Germany: there is a threat of a scorching heat of up to 44 degrees! Meteorologist Karsten Brandt sees human lives in danger and appeals to the Germans: “Stay at home, this is an emergency.” If necessary, he calls on politicians to deploy the Bundeswehr to protect the population.

It will be hellish on Sunday: 44 degrees could be reached in Berlin and Brandenburg, and Magdeburg, Frankfurt/Oder and around Cottbus are also threatened with unprecedented extreme weather. Southern Germany and Bavaria are heating up to 38 degrees – the heat dome – a tight high-pressure bubble with extreme temperatures – is moving over to us from France.

Karsten Brandt on the values ​​that dwarf everything: “When I saw the forecast from the German weather model ICON for the coming Sunday on Thursday, I was speechless. There have never been values ​​of up to 44 degrees in Germany.” He advises not to leave the house: “People, stay at home if possible. It’s too dangerous outside.”

Expert calls heat “thermal storm situation”

Because these values ​​top everything. Also the previous peak value of 41.2 degrees (July 25, 2019 in Duisburg and Tönisvorst). Expert Karsten Brandt explains the difference: “Six years ago we had a selective peak, now Germany is glowing for days and across the board.” The expert speaks of a “thermal storm”, a persistent, widespread heat stress that can cost human lives: “Older and weak people in particular are now at risk and could become dehydrated. The number of patients in hospitals is increasing by around 15 percent, and strokes are also increasing.” A situation in which not everyone can help themselves anymore. Brandt calls on politicians: “Cooling centers must now be provided; if necessary, the Bundeswehr will have to get involved. I expect politicians to take care and make the heat wave a top priority. Good communication and an open approach are important now. For example, by calling for neighborly help. That will reach many more people.”
