6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan and Pakistan

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located about 43 kilometers from the city of Jurm, in the Hindu Kush mountainous region, close to the borders with Tajikistan and Pakistan. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 200 km, a factor that contributed to it being perceived in distant areas.

Region is one of the most seismic in the world

The epicenter of the earthquake is in the Hindu Kush mountain range, one of the most seismically active regions on the planet. The area is located where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, whose collision causes frequent earthquakes, some of them of great intensity.

The earthquake comes just three days after the strong tremors that hit Venezuela on June 24. The earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, left at least 920 people dead, in addition to thousands of injured and missing people, according to the most recent report by Venezuelan authorities.

In Venezuela, hundreds of buildings collapsed, mainly in the state of La Guaira and the metropolitan region of Caracas. The government declared a state of emergency, mobilized the Armed Forces for rescue operations and received support from international search and humanitarian aid teams.

At the time of writing this report, Afghan and Pakistani authorities had not yet released an official statement on possible victims or damages caused by this Saturday’s earthquake.
