Prime Minister of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation

Prime Minister of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu announced that he is resigning. The statement was published on Friday, July 3, on his Facebook page. Munteanu did not give a specific reason for his decision.

“Today I complete my mandate as prime minister. I accepted the offer to become prime minister with great responsibility and the firm conviction that I can contribute to change for the better. At the moment when I realized that I can no longer fulfill my mandate in accordance with the principles and beliefs that I adhere to, I choose to leave,” Munteanu wrote.

Alexandru Munteanu was confirmed as Prime Minister of Moldova in October 2025 after the victory of the pro-European PAS party in the parliamentary elections. Prior to his appointment, he worked as an economist, including at the World Bank, and had not previously held political positions. He called his priorities at the head of the government “EU, peace, growth.”

Munteanu’s resignation comes as Chisinau attempts to push for Moldova’s EU membership, implement reforms and deal with the economic fallout from the war in Ukraine. It has not yet been announced who may lead the new government.
